  • Sharon,
I think it is so important to visit the houses and environments of the people we study or to see the objects they touched. This is one of the many reasons I wanted to study in the UK. Whether it is Eliot’s dress, Austen’s desk, or Hardy’s garden and pet cemetery at Max Gate…I certainly think this lends a deeper understanding of the world they inhabited. Specific objects could really be useful in terms of research although I am still trying to find a way to incorporate this into my own research. I am not quite sure how to go about this, or how to write about objects and literature. As I have mentioned before, I felt a sort of childish delight upon seeing a steam engine (this was quite surprising) because it added a very atmospheric element to the industrial novels I have read. It made me quite happy. But what do you do with that?
